The first two Batman Arkham games garnered near-unanimous praise from critics. We say four games because the release after Arkham City was Arkham Origins, which had nothing to do with Rocksteady. They’ve never seemed very happy about that, and have always referred to the series as trilogy. But although very similar to Arkham City, Origins was a perfectly decent game, with the best boss fights of the series, and it’s a shame it’s not been included here. Or perhaps not given how disappointing these remasters are.
Rocksteady don’t seem to have had anything to do with the remasters, and instead Chinese developer Virtuos has been brought in to handle them. They’ve done decent work before, on things like Final Fantasy X X-2 HD Remaster, but in trying to switch the games over from Unreal Engine 3 to 4 they seem to have overextended themselves. Which seems so needless considering both games still look great on their original formats.
As it is, you can probably guess the problems already, including an uneven frame rate that can’t even manage a permanent 30 frames per seconds. The slowdown is rarely a major problem, but the performance is definitely worse than the original versions and always distracting when it happens.
But even the changes that should be positive, such as the more detailed textures don’t work, because the overall look of the game has changed for the worse. Everything is much brighter now, perhaps in attempt to show off the new graphics, but that ruins the gothic tone. Whether that’s a technical failing or a bone-headed artistic decision we’re not sure, but it undercuts the atmosphere of the entire game. Something has been lost in terms of the facial animation too, with all the characters looking like they’ve had too much plastic surgery and can’t emote as they once did.

If you haven’t played the games before then they’re by no means broken by these remasters, and they do come with all their DLC. But it’s going to be hard for a new player to understand why the games are so well regarded, given how mediocre they look on the current gen consoles. You’d be far better off playing the originals on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, or ideally PC, and enjoying the superior versions of the best superhero games ever made.
